Adekunle Akinola is a vibrant, empathetic and versatile psychiatric/mental health nurse with valuable experience in identifying and finding solutions to clients’ actual and potential problems. His background in nursing and specialization in mental health have earned him invaluable experience not only in caring for persons with mental, neurological and substance use disorders {MNS} but also in advocating for better treatment and friendlier policies to improve their health status and dignity.

Adekunle’s employs the “therapeutic use of self” approach in caring for persons across various age groups and has subsequently developed dexterity in using previous and lived experiences in assessing and providing necessary care and support to people in accordance with internationally acceptable standards and in conformity with ethical and professional standards. Adekunle prides himself in ensuring that the interests of his clients takes topmost priority and is protected in every of his interactions with them.

Having had his fair share of “troubled” childhood/adolescence experience, Adekunle has developed this affinity and special bond in working with persons within this age group and providing support in navigating through their emotional and psychological turbulence. His lived experience ensures that he clearly understands what they are going through and is able to employ strategies that have worked for him and others in the past.

Adekunle has spent a substantial part of his over 15 years of practice as a mental health nurse getting involved in schools mental health intervention programmes designed to improve students’ mental health, and signposting them and their families/carers to the needed services appropriate to meeting their needs.

When Adekunle is not working, he enjoys creative writing, reading, poetry, singing, traveling, debates, and attending conferences and seminars. His objective is to enhance his performance and make meaningful impact in all endeavours, harnessing and utilizing all he has learnt in school, skills and experiences garnered from participating in extracurricular activities, and continuing professional development.
