Adrian Tan
Data Scientist, Urban Planner, and Researcher in Singapore
Hello!
I am an urban planning and data science graduate from Singapore. I hold a B.A. (Hons) in Global Studies awarded by National University of Singapore, and an M.Sc. in Urban Science, Policy and Planning awarded by Singapore University of Technology and Design. I am skilled in data science (R, Python, Git to name a few), social science research design, and graphic design. I am also fluent in English, Mandarin, Modern Standard Arabic, and French.
I am interested in the social aspects of corporate behaviour and urban planning, which led me to the disciplines of anthropology and sociology while pursuing Global Studies in NUS. I was particularly intrigued by the power of big data in elucidating the impacts of policy measures and business strategies on the lives of laypeople. Consequently, I was motivated to pursue an M.Sc in Urban Science so that I can integrate big data into research on urban transformations and corporate behaviours in Asia and beyond.
Professionally, I have work experience as an intern in the private sector and a researcher in university-level research projects.
I started off as a marketing Intern in an MNC, Firmenich Asia, followed by a stint as a Marketing and Business Intelligence intern in a startup, Momentum Works. In Firmenich Asia, I mined, visualised, and summarised market trend for global and regional marketing managers. Following that, I spent a summer with Momentum Works where conducted business intelligence research to explore the suitability of launching Fintech products in the Halal market.
In terms of university-level research, I was a research assistant in several university-level research projects in the field of history, sociology and economics. In the National University of Singapore, I was a research assistant in Asia Centre for Social Entrepreneurship and Philanthropy (ACSEP) in 2018 where I assisted Economics Professor Dr Frank Hubers in history research entitled "200 Years of Philanthropy." I also assisted Dr. Hubers in editing his papers on behavioural economics and preparing his workshops on social impact measurements. In 2019, I joined Dr Zhan Shaohua's sociology team to conduct large-scale qualitative research on "Immigration and Integration in the Pacific Rim."
