Student, Fitness Instructor, and Construction Worker in Athens, Georgia
The common saying is that life comes with its' bumps and bruises, and while this in some manner is true for everyone, I took it upon myself to take this quote literally.
Over this past summer I took my first real job as a construction worker. I was expecting to be working with power tools, building massive homes, and becoming an expert in the field. However, reality did not meet my expectations, as all they truly needed was someone to do the heavy lifting. And as a skinny guy I will be the first to admit that this job was not meant for me because I was constantly lifting things, I had no business lifting and I would come this close to crushing myself every day.
I truly hated this job, and I was truly terrible at it, but because of my busy schedule I knew I would never be able to quit. It was the only job I could get. One of these days I knew I was going to seriously hurt myself, and finally it happened. A 200-pound door slipped out of my coworkers' hands and as a result crushed my wrist. I went to the hospital the next morning and discovered I had shattered the growth plate in my right hand and was to be put in a cast for 6 weeks.
The first few days were glum, but as an optimist I quickly found the bright side. I no longer had to work at the job I despised! Oh free at last! I would never have to go back to that gruesome warehouse ever again. The cast was almost worth it in my eyes. As the days went on, the thrill of no longer having to work ceased to exist. In its' place, was happy memories of working with the friends I made. It made me miss the job I couldn't wait to leave from.
These memories grew stronger with every day, until I knew I had to go back. So with one week left in the summer, I slipped on my cast, ate breakfast, and went to go make some more memories.
