About Me

I’m Ajay Sohal, a Senior Patent Research Analyst based in India. My work sits at the intersection of intellectual property, emerging technology, and technical research, with a particular focus on patent analytics, firmware and hardware teardowns, and standards-essential patent (SEP) analysis.

A significant part of my work involves analyzing complex technologies and translating them into clear, technically grounded patent insights. I have worked extensively with 3GPP wireless standards, including the analysis of standards-related technologies and their relationship to patent claims. I co-authored a published guidebook on 3GPP wireless standards, reflecting my interest in making technically complex standards more accessible and useful for IP professionals and researchers.

Beyond standards and patent analysis, I have written technical articles covering areas such as telecommunications infrastructure and backhaul networks, as well as emerging materials and technologies including piezoresistive and piezochromic materials. My broader interests span wireless communication, electronics, embedded systems, and the ways in which emerging technologies can be analyzed through an IP lens.

Alongside my professional work, I founded an independent patent analytics practice focused on helping IP firms, attorneys, and technology-focused teams with technically demanding research. My work includes SEP and FRAND claim charting, prior-art searches, freedom-to-operate (FTO) analysis, patent landscaping, and broader patent intelligence. I particularly enjoy projects that require understanding both the underlying technology and the legal or commercial context in which that technology operates.

Outside the world of intellectual property, I have a strong interest in embedded systems and hardware. I enjoy building and experimenting with electronics, including STM32-based projects and RF/walkie-talkie systems. I’m also interested in optics, photography, and swimming, which give me a balance between technical work and hands-on exploration.
