Melissa Smith – Transforming Struggle into Purpose
Born and raised in Oakland, I’ve faced immense challenges that shaped my commitment to community transformation. Despite a turbulent upbringing, I earned a four-year scholarship to Stevenson High School in Pebble Beach, graduating with an acceptance to San Jose State University. But life took a devastating turn—returning home, I experienced violence and trauma that derailed my plans and led me down a path of self-medicating.
After fighting my way back, I reunited with my father, found sobriety, and co-founded multiple businesses with him. But another painful chapter awaited—a decade-long abusive relationship left me homeless, unemployed, and disconnected from everything I had built. Through sheer determination, I regained stability, working multiple jobs to rebuild my life, only to face harassment and injustice once again—this time from a landlord who retaliated against me for rejecting his advances.
These experiences ignited my vision for Project Sheets, Not Streets—a program that provides not just shelter but dignified, structured pathways to independence. I created SWAG (Starts With A Goal) to empower individuals with tailored resources, mentorship, and job training.
Now, I am actively seeking a donated property to launch this initiative—a safe haven where people can heal, rebuild, and transition toward stability through goal-driven programs and community support.
If you believe in transforming lives through housing and empowerment, I’d love to connect and collaborate.
