Head of Geography: King's Ely (Junior), Cambridgeshire

In 2008, after 20 years teaching Geography / ICT to 'A' level, I joined the Geographical Association as Secondary Curriculum Leader. I've been involved in over 400 CPD sessions in the UK & Europe since. I've written the GA's Webwatch feature for 10 years. My Living Geography blog has had almost 2.5 million readers.

Since 2011, I've worked as a freelance author & geographer, completing work for Google, BBC, Collins, EDINA, Ordnance Survey, Follow the Things, ESRI UK, British Red Cross, Costa & many others. I've written books for Badger, Cambridge University Press, Hodder & the GA, and children's books for Collins. I worked for the Open University's VITAL service for 18 months.

I'm a Fellow of the Royal Geographical Society, a Chartered Geographer (Teacher), GA Primary Geography Champion & consultant to the GA. In 2013, I received the Tivy Education Medal & Hon. Fellowship from the Royal Scottish Geographical Society. I'm co-founder of the Geography Collective, creators of the Mission:Explore books. We've worked with National Geographic Education, RSPB, John Muir Trust, INTEL, Thames Water, Do it Kits and many others. Mission:Explore was Hay Festival / National Trust Outdoors Book of the Year 2011, runner-up in Educational Writers' Award, & shortlisted for Innovation award in LotC 2012 & 2014. While teaching, I received the RGS-IBG OS Award for 'excellence in secondary geography teaching' & 4 writing projects have won GA Silver awards. 'Fieldwork through Enquiry', co-written with John Widdowson won the SAGT Book Award in 2013. 'Pole of Cold', written for a Felicity Aston expedition won an SAGT non-book award. I've received 5 Innovative Geography Teaching awards from the RGS-IBG.

New textbooks in 2016 were co-written for OCR GCSE (Hodder), and edited/co-written for AQA 'A' level (CUP)

I'm involved in the GI-Learner (2015-2018) project, and currently working with Exeter University (Ice Flows), Felicity Aston (N Pole expedition 2018), Dr. Peter Knight, and the RGS Data Skills in Geography project.

I serve on the GA's Secondary Committee, and am available for further consultancy - get in touch.
