My name is Alexa, and I was born on November 5, 1990 to an old hippie and a very young 80's fan. I grew up with books and telescopes and chalk, and I preferred spending my time indoors reading and writing rather than playing outdoors.
I have always been incredibly sensitive and overly emotional, but at the age of 11-12, I became severally depressed during junior high school. This lasted for three years and was thought of as a "phase" among my parents. By the time I was in high school, I was out of this deep hole with no idea how, but still had severe depressive episodes. By the time I graduated, I had my first breakdown, which was a mixture of obsessive-compulsive traits, as well as bipolar traits. Over the next few years, I finally sought treatment.
Currently, as a young adult, I am with an amazing licensed clinical psychologist and also a psychiatrist. I have been diagnosed with obsessive-compulsive disorder and bipolar II disorder. My experiences with mental illness have led me to where I am today -- studying psychology at Virginia Commonwealth University. I wish to specialize in mood disorders and art therapy. I have become a huge advocate for the prevention of suicide and self-injury, and also the fight against the stigma surrounding mental illness.
As much as it feels as if you're alone, you're not. I promise you. You are never alone.
