Alice Omaji grew up in Yarbun, a small rural village in Southern Kaduna, Kaduna State, Nigeria. She learnt the power of unconditional love from her family and community which gave her a great sense of belonging and self-esteem.

Her father, Mallam Dangana, who is the village chief, exemplified a strong belief in the power of human beings to make a difference in their world, when they come together. This worldview made Alice’s family to enjoy good neighbourliness with other ethnic groups, including the Fulani and the Hausa ethnic and Islamic religious groups, who supported each other to overcome daily challenges and celebrated together. For example, Alice had a Fulani mother that she used to spend a lot of her time in her ruga, and her children also became part of Alice’s family.

Alice learnt very early what it means to be “your brother’s keeper” and to not leave anyone behind.

This worldview in the belief of the power of human beings to overcome any challenge, guided her work in Australia to ensure effective integration of Black African migrants into mainstream Australia, with great success. Mrs. Alice Omaji still looks forward to seeing a more inclusive Australia – and indeed the world – “for we have a lot to enjoy from each other.” This book is geared towards achieving this goal in the world.
