Alison Morton
Teacher in Vietnam
Greetings,
My name is Janet Mairi Alison Morton with my given name being Alison. I have been teaching for 26 years with most of my experience being in Ontario teaching all grades JK to 6. I have been a classroom teacher, a teacher-librarian and a Core English teacher in a French Immersion School. I have worked in inner city schools and upper-middle class neighbourhoods with a variety of family situations in each of the schools I have taught. I spent a year on teacher exchange in Brisbane, Australia and my current assignment by choice is in an International school in Vietnam.
My strengths in teaching are related to reading and language acquisition. I started my teaching career in Early Childhood Education working in daycares as both a teacher and a supervisor. I love being part of the process of language acquisition with young children which contributes to literacy in the early school grades. Creating a fascination with words, vocabulary, reading and self-expression within a classroom is a never-ending pursuit and one I never seem to tire of. This interest has led me towards further learning and acquiring specialists in both Library and Reading.
I am currently on an adventure in Vietnam teaching at an international school in Saigon (Ho Chi Minh City). My son has accompanied me on this journey and is studying year 11 at my sister school. It is fascinating to watch his integration as he is the only “western” student in all of grade 11. He has been fully adopted and accepted by his Vietnamese classmates, who are now friends, and is more integrated than I will likely ever be. My daughter is in her first year of university at Queen’s and my husband is our strong base in Canada keeping us all grounded in our individual pursuits.
I hope to “pick your brains” for ideas to use with my grade 2 class of 20 Vietnamese students and also mine the course for information to use in my half position in the library as well.
