Alison Smart is a highly experienced professional singer and teacher of singing, choral director and vocal coach, with piano-playing skills and competence in several European languages.

She has been a staff member, BBC Singers since 1995 (50% contract since 2002).

She was appointed Director of Music, St Mary-at-Finchley Parish Church, London in 2007, directing adult, youth and community choirs. She is the curator of a successful chamber music concert series at St Mary's.

With 30 years' experience of training young singers, individually and chorally in a wide repertoire Alison is in demand as a teacher of singing. Many of her students have been awarded ABRSM distinctions; one student is now in the National Youth Choir of Great Britain; one has recently graduated from Genesis Sixteen.

Alison is also an experienced solo recitalist and has made three solo CD albums including 20 songs which she commissioned jointly with pianist Katharine Durran. One of these songs won the British Composers' Awards Song prize in 2006. She loves working with composers.

Alison was project manager of a major church organ restoration project which raised £137K. She is the Chairperson of RSCM London.

In her spare time she writes the occasional concert review, gives lecture recitals and is a published author on such diverse topics as Schoenberg's 'Pierrot Lunaire' and Ancient Mythology.
