As the First Prize winner of the Richmond Sigma Alpha Iota Scholarship Competition in Richmond, Virginia, and a recipient of the Dean’s Talent Award at Oberlin Conservatory of Music, pianist Althea Chan has performed solo, chamber music and vocal recitals throughout the U.S., in Europe, as well as in Hong Kong and has had the opportunity to perform in masterclasses of Pascal Rogé, John O’Connor, Awadagin Pratt, Douglas Humphreys, and Janice Weber. In 2012, Althea was invited to perform at the prestigious Xinghai Concert Hall in Guangzhou, China.
Born and raised in Hong Kong, Althea began her piano studies with her parents at the age of 6. She obtained her Bachelor of Music degree in Piano Performance from Oberlin Conservatory of Music(Oberlin, Ohio, USA). During her studies at Oberlin, she also worked as a piano instructor through the secondary piano program at Oberlin. For the past few summers, Althea had been invited to Green Mountain Chamber Music Festival(Burlington, VT) and Meadowmount School of Music(Westport, NY) with a full scholarship.
She is currently pursuing a Master of Music degree in solo performance at the Hochschule für Musik und Tanz Köln, under the tutelage of Prof. Nina Tichman. Her former teachers include Prof. Angela Cheng and Dr. Dmitri Shteinberg.
