Trades Union

WHO WE ARE

UA Local 516 is the HVAC/R local union in British Columbia with over 1,300 members working behind the scenes to serve Canadians' daily needs. The union is committed to protecting and advancing the economic and social goals of its members, advocating for job security, benefits, a living wage, a safe working environment, and a comfortable retirement income. The voices and concerns of each member are valued in the pursuit of a better life for all.

UA Local 516 was established in August 1942 with an initial group of 38 dedicated individuals who received the Charter from the United Association. While early records are limited, the union experienced growth in the 70s with the rise of the refrigeration industry and the evolving demand for air conditioning and service technicians. In the 90s, the Local expanded significantly and relocated to its current building in Surrey, which conveniently houses the primary training school for HVAC/R mechanics.

In June 2013, Jason Amesbury became the fourth Business Manager of Local 516 and was subsequently re-elected in 2014, 2017, 2020, and 2023. The union has made remarkable progress since its humble beginnings, transforming from a lesser-known and low-paying industry to one of the most esteemed and well-compensated trades. With a focus on member welfare and families, UA Local 516 offers exceptional retirement and health plans, including retirement savings contributions of up to $10.75 per hour, promising a secure future for members and their loved ones.
