Andrew Hewitt is drummer was born with Cerebral Palsy, which restricts movement in his arms and legs, which forces him to use a wheelchair. This has made drumming a very serious challenge; however this has never stood in Andrew’s way.
Andrew has become a world renowned drummer, and has been given the title “Australia’s most inspirational drummer” from his peers worldwide. For close to 30 years, he has worked successfully as a Drummer, Drum Teacher, Motivational Speaker, Workshop Facilitator, and Disability Advocate.
Andrew has performed with many bands, hosted drum and hand percussion workshops throughout Australia.
July 2009, Andrew entered the world stage with a performance with Dom and Mike (Can-Do Musos) at Australia’s Ultimate Drummers Weekend in Melbourne.
In November 2011, Andrew was involved in Re-writing the Score, a weeklong collaboration between disabled and non-disabled at the Orange Regional Conservatorium.
Andrew has appeared globally in publications such as Modern Drummer (USA), DRUM, Rhythm (UK), The Black Page (Canada), Drums & Percussion (Germany) and Australia's own Drum scene magazine.
Andrew teaches drum kit, hand drums and percussion. Most of Andrew’s drum students have a disability. The idea isn't to find the next rock star, but to boost the student’s confidence and give them a bit of hope and guidance. There is only one rule; the word CAN’T stays outside the front door.
Andrew is an Australian facilitator for TRAP (The Rhythmic Arts Project) an educational program using hand drums. Andrew attended TRAP Training in Santa Barbara, California in 2013.
Andrew is a founding member and director of Can-Do Musos, a global voice which has been established to support musicians living with a disability from all over the world.
Andrew has presented and performed at the NAMM Show in Anaheim, California, USA. In 2017 and 2019 Andrew was involved in stage performances featuring all disabled musicians at NAMM.
In October 2017, he performed in Berlin Germany as part of Arts Access Australia's Berlin Exchange Project.
