Professional qualifications:

I am currently employed as Head of Information Assurance and Security at NHS Dumfries & Galloway. I am also leading on the Voice and Data Technology design for the new Dumfries & Galloway District General Hospital. This will be a 320 bed hospital and is due to open in 2018.

NHS Dumfries & Galloway is an organisation with 4,500 directly and 1,000 indirectly employed staff and it has an annual turnover of approximately £300m. It is a public sector organisation which provides primary, secondary and tertiary health care to a population of 147,000 people in a region which extends 120 miles to East to West and 50 miles North to South. We have an estate of approximately 200 servers and 3,000 desktops.

My Information Assurance role includes developing, implementing and managing information governance and security policies which are designed to ensure compliance with relevant legislation and government requirements. I am senior professional lead on all matters concerning Information Assurance and Security. I provide mandatory Information Governance and Security training to all staff.

My role in the new Hospital build is that of senior professional design lead for technology integration into the health care model. I am responsible for designing the data centres, data networks and associated technologies. I am also the main point of contact for investigating the use of new technologies to ensure safe, efficient and effective care for the health of our patients.

Prior to this role I offered consultancy services in networking and security. I first became involved in computing in 1979 in the RAF. I served a telephony apprenticeship with GPO Telephones (now BT).

I have been CNE, CCNA and Solaris qualified. I gained certification to ISEB CISMP in 2008 and ISEB BCS Certification at Practitioner level on the Data Protection Act in 2014. I have extensive working experience of designing and implementing telephony systems.

I am a professional member of both BCS and the IET. I am a member of the committee for BCS Health Scotland and am Northern Events Co-ordinator for the BCS Information Risk Management group. I also sit on the IET Healthcare Technologh Committee.
