My name is Andrew. I am assistant professor of rhetoric and composition studies, which is a professional field of teaching and research focused on college-level writing. My research currently focuses on investigating teaching discomfort in first-year writing classrooms. I have always been interested in dyadic and group dynamics. I have a degree in Sociology, which influences how I observe and interact with my writing classes. I relate to classrooms as organic social structures--each component plays a part in the overall structure. Often, a component will experience a block, resistance, or failure. I want to know how and when these dynamics facilitate learning and when they interfere--especially for those students who belong to culturally vulnerable groups, or who have experienced adverse life events. My research specializations include queer and feminist theory, emotion, affect, and psychodynamic psychological theory, history of rhetoric and composition studies, WPA, and qualitative methods.
