Growing up as the only child with parents who are not very well educated, his mum always told Andy to study hard and get a degree then he will have a good life. That may be true in the 80s but no longer enough in the 21st Century. The wants and the needs are different and aspirations are different. He seldom saw his father when he was a kid as his father was always busy with work. That made Andy thought about spending more time with his children in future.
Finally graduated and armed with an Honors Degree in Network Computing, Andy thought he was ready to work towards his dreams. Having worked in a SME, civil service then one of the “Big 4” accounting firms, he experienced the different aspects of working in different sectors and quickly climbed the corporate ladder to mid-management after a few years. However, the biggest change in priorities came with the birth of his first child. Andy wants to spend more time with his daughter. He wants to witness her first steps, her first words and many other firsts. A regular job, especially in a demanding, fast-paced environment, just doesn’t allow that possibility.
What job offers flexible working timing, non-existent income ceiling and still a career path? After talking to the salesperson who found him his resale HDB flat, she became Andy’s manager.
It is never easy to start in a completely different career. Mind-set needs to be changed, working style needs to be modified and self-discipline is very important in this industry. The beginning was tough especially in a difficult market situation but the results so far are encouraging.
From associate to director in ERA in less than 2 years, Andy does his best to help his clients achieve their objectives - upgrading their lifestyle, free up more cash, right-sizing their properties, etc.
It is never about him, it is about his clients' needs. Helping them is actually helping himself as he believe in putting the clients' needs before his own objectives.
