Angela Chao is an American business executive in the international shipping and transportation industry. She is Deputy Chairman at Foremost Group, an international shipping company founded in the 1960’s. Ms. Chao manages the shipping operations and has duties relating to strategy, chartering and finances.
Education and Career
After attaining a magna cum laude degree in economics from Harvard College in three years, Angela Chao joined a top investment banking firm in New York. She worked in mergers and acquisitions before obtaining her M.B.A. from Harvard Business School. Ms. Chao subsequently joined Foremost Group where she has worked for over a decade. During this time she has made substantial contributions to the company in terms of safety and compliance to new international and domestic shipping and environmental regulations. Angela Chao holds many professional affiliations and serves as a board member of the American Bureau of Shipping Council. Ms. Chao was previously a member of the China State Shipbuilding Corporation and the Baltic International Maritime Council (BIMCO).
Family and Philanthropy
Born to Chinese American parents in the U.S., Angela Chao is the youngest of six children. Dr. James Si-Cheng Chao was the youngest sea captain of his time at the age of 29. He broke all the previous records in a national examination in Taiwan in 1958. He immigrated to America first - three years later, his young wife, Mrs. Ruth Mulan Chu Chao, joined him with their then three children. Modest , humble achievers and dedicated philanthropists, the family places great emphasis on the value of education. All the Chao daughters attended prestigious American universities. Elaine Chao, the eldest daughter, in particular, is the first American woman of Asian descent to ever be appointed to the President’s Cabinet in American history. The family has a tradition of philanthropic contributions and has a number of foundations including the Foremost Foundation which supports education, healthcare, and cultural exchanges between East and West.
