I’ve always loved the sweet, warm smell that dominates the bakery down the street from my childhood home. The rising cakes in the oven accompanied by the variety of pastries in the glass container always were the best start to my Saturday mornings. So one morning, I went to the bakery as a part of my Saturday routine and decided to try an almond bark brownie. To my surprise, I soon realized that I had developed an allergy to all peanuts, tree nuts, sesame, and coconut-related products.

From that moment onwards, my lifestyle and food habits drastically changed. I was forced to double and triple-check every meal, snack, and drink that I consumed. It felt so much harder to find food products that I enjoyed.

While this process felt nothing but annoying, I decided I wanted to take the initiative to create my own nut-free chocolate chip cookies. Trial after trial, I tested my recipe, burning almost three batches of cookies., but I realized baking was something that I genuinely enjoyed. It was an outlet where I could express my creativity. When I finally felt satisfied with my recipe, I decided to sell my product at my local neighborhood bake sale.

When my small stand of cookies eventually sold out, it felt so rewarding knowing that all my hard work had paid off. I even got to share peanut-free recipes with another mom whose son also suffers from food allergies.

What started as the worst nightmare for me inadvertently helped me develop a passion for baking. Although I am still an amateur baker, I know that I have a lot more to learn in the future. I hope one day I will be able to create my peanut-free line of baked goods.
