Anmol Bains
Student in Guelph, Ontario
Hello! I'm Anmol, a fourth-year undergraduate student studying at the University of Guelph. I am a Bachelor of Science candidate, specializing in Biological Sciences. I have a strong academic background in statistics and a diverse understanding of biological concepts ranging from genes to climate change.
My hobbies include volunteering, which combines my personal interests of mentoring and helping youth with my professional interests of understanding human health. I currently volunteer for SickKids in the Emergency Department as a research trainee to enroll eligible patients for various pediatric studies, such as anaphylactic shock, toddler fractures, and neuroinflammation. Additionally, I currently volunteer for the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health (CAMH). I am part of a clinical research team that helps youth and adolescents that are psychiatrically referred to the clinic for disruptive behaviour, emotional dysregulation, and social skills difficulties. I conduct assessments and compile reports, which are used to determine whether group interventions are appropriate. I have proudly authored two academic publications with my CAMH supervisors. During summers, I volunteer as a counselor for Camp Cambria, an overnight camp for youth with juvenile arthritis. Through this role, I lead campers to learn about their disease through socializing with others going through the same thing, while encouraging a fun camp atmosphere full of sports and games that support their medical needs. My interests also include video games, baking, and traveling!
I am greatly interested in epidemiology, as using statistics and data distributions to understand the causes and risk factors of health and disease conditions both intrigues and excites me! My current career goal is to be accepted into a Master of Science program with a specialization in epidemiology or public health. I aspire to work for the Public Health Agency of Canada, study and analyze trends in disease incidences, and elicit change within populations by raising awareness, increasing knowledge, and changing behaviours on public health concerns.
Want to know a secret? Many people don't know that I’m an adrenaline junkie! I have a couple of bucket list items crossed out, such as hot air ballooning, the CN Tower Edge Walk, white water river rafting, bungee jumping, track car racing, and zip-lining upside down over a deep valley in Peru! I still have many more to look forward to, including scuba diving and skydiving.
