Why Choose a Paediatric Neuropsychologist?
When a child is struggling, it can be hard to know which professional to turn to. Both educational psychologists and paediatric neuropsychologists play important roles, but they focus on different things.
Educational psychologists mainly look at how a child is learning in the classroom. They help schools understand educational needs and recommend strategies to support learning.
Paediatric neuropsychologists are specialists in how a child’s brain development, medical history, or neurological conditions affect their thinking, emotions, and behaviour. They can assess areas like:
• Attention and concentration
• Memory and learning
• Language and communication
• Problem-solving and organisation
• Social and emotional functioning
A neuropsychological assessment can be especially helpful if your child has:
- A history of brain injury, epilepsy, or another neurological condition
- Developmental differences such as autism or ADHD
- Issues with memory, attention, or behaviour that may be linked to brain function
- Issues with academic progress, which may suggest features of specific learning difficulties such as dyslexia
- Medical treatments (e.g. chemotherapy, surgery) that could affect learning
By identifying both strengths and challenges, a paediatric neuropsychologist provides a clear understanding of how your child learns and processes information, and creates tailored recommendations to support them at home, at school, and in healthcare.
My professional background:
Within the NHS, I have worked in a range of specialist paediatric settings, including Great Ormond Street Hospital (GOSH), Chelsea & Westminster, and the Evelina London Children's Hospital. I have extensive experience of working with children with neurodevelopmental and neurological issues, including epilepsy, stroke, encephalitis, metabolic conditions, autism spectrum disorder (ASD), attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), and learning difficulties.
I currently work part-time within the Paediatric Neuropsychology Team at GOSH, where my role is within the children's epilepsy service. I am also an Honorary Senior Research Fellow at University College London (UCL).
