In the spring of fifth grade, Miss Paula from the Columbus Metropolitan Library walked into my classroom to talk about the VolunTeen program. As a girl who pretended to be afraid of the dark so I could use my night light to read past my bedtime, working at a library sounded like the best job in the world.
For the last 12 summers, I returned to the Columbus Metropolitan Library. Each year, I helped monitor and plan programs for each summer’s 80+ VolunTeens while assisting with larger projects related to the Summer Reading Club. By working daily to motivate teenagers to create a passion for reading in children, I discovered a passion in myself for teaching and inspiring others.
Twelve years after Miss Paula first visited my fifth grade classroom, I have honed the skills gained through my experiences working with children and teenagers, my college courses, and my participation in the Disney College Program to jump start a career as a librarian with a passion for children and young adult literature.
