Anthony Herbert

Brooklyn, New York

Who am I??? Tony has been a tireless community advocate for over 25 years. As the Founder & CEO of Advocates Without Borders, a social advocacy network, he has been at the forefront of addressing issues that plague Brooklyn communities and beyond. In 2012 when the National Action Network (NAN) implemented the ‘Occupy the Corners’ initiative to deter gun violence, Herbert was instrumental in ensuring that areas in Brownsville were covered.

After recognizing his leadership abilities, in 2013, the Reverend Al Sharpton appointed Herbert as the president of the National Action Network Brooklyn East Chapter. In this capacity, Herbert has worked with NAN and law enforcement agencies and community orgs to denounce various issues from the possible closure of Interfaith Hospital to the violent street ‘Knockout Game.’

Herbert understands the plight of the working class because his family experienced homelessness when he was a teenager. During this time, his mother a public school aide for over 30 years, instilled in him the importance of family, hard work, and being of service to others. This sparked his passion for community advocacy, so he joined the Lions Club International, a community service organization.

In addition to his community advocacy efforts, Herbert has an extensive background in business, politics, and community outreach. Some of his experience include: working as the Statewide Director of Community Relations for former NY State Senator Minority Counsel Leader, Martin Connor; special assistant to former Congressman Edolphus Towns (D-10th District); vice president of Government Affairs for Vital Marketing Group, and senior vice president of Government Relations and Small Business Development for Bridgepoint Capital Investment Bank.

Committed to working on behalf of the disenfranchised, and for those who've been victimized, Herbert is a formidable leader with fresh and pragmatic ideas on how to help others. Herbert serves as an advisor on a number of Community and Youth organization boards.

In addition, Tony is VP of Youth Step USA and Regional VP of The National High School Basketball Association as well as the Citywide Engagement Chair of The NAACP-NYCHA Branch. Herbert is the proud father of two sons and a daughter. He resides in the Bedford Stuyvesant section of Brooklyn and is a member of The United Goodwill Temple Community Church. # # #
