Anthony Barrese

An opera conductor with international experience, Anthony Barrese serves as the artistic director at Opera Southwest, located in Albuquerque, New Mexico. He oversees the programming and casting for each season and has selected to mount a return engagement of a four-year cycle featuring the operatic works of Gioachino Rossini. Anthony Barrese will direct Il Turco in Italia, the first in the Rossini series, in April 2016.

Mr. Barrese has developed an extensive conducting repertoire including well-known compositions by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and Giacomo Puccini, whose opera La bohème he led in his debut in Milan. In addition to recent engagements at Sarasota Opera and Opera Theatre of St. Louis, Mr. Barrese conducted the Florida Grand Opera in Les pêcheurs de perles by Georges Bizet.

In preparation for his career, Anthony Barrese earned a BM in composition at Trinity University. He further developed his composition skills by obtaining a master’s degree from the New England Conservatory of Music in Boston, Massachusetts.
