Apotex Inc., founded in 1974 by Dr. Barry Sherman, is the largest Canadian-owned pharmaceutical company. The Canadian operations of the Apotex Group of Companies have over 5,500 employees. Extensive investments in Canadian facilities include over 3 million square feet in manufacturing and R&D facilities in Richmond Hill, Toronto, Etobicoke, Brantford, Windsor, and Winnipeg.
Out of the total employee base, there are close to 2,000 scientific staff including 110 PhDs. Apotex produces more than 300 generic medicines in over 4,000 dosages and formats which, in Canada, are used to fill over 89 million prescriptions a year – the largest amount of any pharmaceutical company in this country. Manufacturing capabilities have risen steadily to close to 30 billion dosages per annum. Its Research and Development expenditures represent 16.4% (2012), thereby placing Apotex in the top 13 R&D companies in Canada and first within the Pharmaceutical industry. Plans are to have expenditures of more than $2.1 billion on R&D in Canada over the next 10 years.
