Based in Grundy, Virginia, Appalachian School of Law (ASL) exists to empower people from Appalachia and other areas to fulfil their goals of serving others as legal professionals. Appalachian School of Law attracts a diverse body of students, many of whom expect to remain in the area to serve the local community following graduation. However, since ASL is an American Bar Association-accredited program, graduation prepares students to take the bar exam in any U.S. state.

At ASL, students learn from highly qualified faculty members who possess more than 200 combined years of legal experience. The ASL program emphasizes core legal skills, such as dispute resolution, professional responsibility, and legal practice. Students who attend ASL must participate in a minimum of 25 community service hours each semester. Examples of service projects include serving as advocates or tutors for children, working in local food pantries, or maintaining nearby hiking trails. Through the community service commitment, ASL students demonstrate their desire to serve others.
