Ariam Alula Frezghi was born in the Bronx in 1991. Frezghi writes predominantly in the medium of nonfiction but includes street photography in her work. She studied journalism at Stony Brook University in Long Island, New York and has interned with five organizations, including Inter Press Service and NY1 News.

Frezghi has traveled to her parent’s native of Eritrea in Northeast Africa three times. On her most recent visit in 2014, she documented everyday life on her iPhone. The 5,000 photos reflect the community of a young nation now on its own feet after a century of colonization. Following her visit, she created a blog titled “Homecoming” which explores transnationalism as a second-generation immigrant. One of her photos made an appearance on Everyday Africa’s Instagram page.

She is currently working on a collection of essays about her relationship with her autistic brother
