Design Research & Strategy in San Francisco, California

Arianna McClain is a Principal Designer | Design x Data Specialist at IDEO.

If you happen to be looking for Arianna’s nose, you're likely to find it in a book... and it'll probably be fiction. She likes fiction because it helps her to understand people she doesn’t understand, and whom she may never meet.

At IDEO, Arianna’s love for hearing people's stories complements her captivation with data. She leads hybrid research processes that merge quantitative data and qualitative stories. Arianna works with teams to zoom in to individual stories and zoom out to understand how those stories fit into the larger population. This hybrid process helps teams empathize with users at scale and generate insights that inspire design and strategy across a range of industries.

Prior to joining IDEO, Arianna worked as a behavioral scientist at Stanford University. She also worked as an independent contractor for projects related to health and the Internet of things for companies such as Nestlé Global and Samsung Electronics.

Arianna holds a BA from UC Berkeley, an MPH in Biostatistics/Epidemiology and a Ph.D. in Health Behavior Research from the University of Southern California’s Keck School of Medicine. Subsequently, she trained as a Post Doctoral Research Fellow at Stanford University School of Medicine. Arianna has published numerous, widely cited papers related to decision-making, behavior change, and experimental design.

When Arianna isn't reading or playing with data, her favorite past time is "granny-style" power walking in beautiful places (aka hiking). Arianna prefers to power walk with a soy latte and good friend, while talking about the latest tech and fashion trends.
