Arimathea Funeral Cooperative
Arimathea Funeral Cooperative was founded in 1993. It employs a staff of funeral directors and embalmers and is governed by a board elected by the annual meeting of its shareholders.
What is a funeral cooperative?
Our consumer society has commercialized death and transformed funeral practices
into a lucrative business, with the result that prices for funeral services in the commerical sector have increased dramatically in recent years. A funeral cooperative, on the other hand, operates on the principles of mutual support and democratic organization, and provides simple, dignified funeral services, on a not for profit basis, as inexpensively as possible.
How much does it cost to join?
The cost of a membership is a one-time payment of $25 for each
Do you have to be a member of Arimathea in order to have your
funeral conducted through Arimathea?
No. Anyone within the geographic area of Arimathea may have their funeral directed by the cooperative.
If you join Arimathea, does this obligate you to a church service?
No. However, unlike other funeral homes, we do not have a chapel or hold
visitations at Arimathea.
What do funerals cost?
Average funeral expenses with the co-op fall between $2,500 and $4,500, plus HST, and are $250 lower for members.
What is Arimathea Funeral Cooperative?
"Arimathea" was the home of Joseph of Arimathea, the person who came, in the New Testament accounts, to attend to Jesus' body. Arimathea Funeral Co-op is a cooperative that makes funeral services available through the community churches in its geographic area. It provides a full range of funeral services. Funeral services
and funeral visitations are held in the sanctuaries and halls of the cooperative's sponsoring congregations. Funeral practices are returned, in this way, to the communities' focal places of mutual support and faith.
What is a sponsoring congregation?
Sponsoring congregations are those which commit the use of their churches to the funeral services and visitations of the cooperative, and which commit themselves to a supportive ministry of bereavement, through participation in the co-op's work.
