Although you might not have ever guessed this, I am the biggest music nerd and lover. No, I can't sing or play any instruments (which is kind of a disappointment, but oh well), but I love listening and learning about songs, bands, and artists. Music has always been a part of my life and I've come to really rely on it every day.

I would say my parents raised me well in the sense that they have great music taste and shared their love for music with me starting at an early age (and no they can't sing or play instruments either). Both of my parents enjoy opposite ends of the spectrum genres of music. My mom loves all the pop songs, especially those from the 80s. She introduced me to Michael Jackson, Prince, Lionel Richie from a very young age. I very clearly remember be absolutely terrified of the Thriller music video when she showed my brother and I one day My dad, on the other hand, loves all songs rock and roll (and I guess metal too). He would always have AC/DC or Guns N' Roses playing in the car on road trips, and typically listens to 97.1 The River (classic rock radio station) every morning.

Combining their love for these genres of music and the artists and songs they favor, plus my own discovery of songs, has allowed me to explore. My parents would be horrified at the fact that I now have a great affinity for country music, given the fact that when I was at Penn State last year, I felt I needed something familiar sounding and country music scratched that itch. Anyways, I love a wide variety of types of music and really find joy in creating playlists specifically catering to how these songs make me feel and the memories attached to them.

When I'm working out or running, I prefer more upbeat or aggressive songs (cue all the classic and alternative rock songs from the 80s and 90s). If I'm studying or walking to class, I like songs that are slower and more calming, such as “Peaceful Easy Feeling” by The Eagles. While I'm driving (depending on my mood), I'll shuffle a playlist and just jam out.

Each day I'm still finding new songs (whether on my own, from friends, or from the radio) and it's fascinating. Each song is completely different and beautiful in its own way, and I enjoy figuring out how each makes me feel and how it'll fit into my playlists (and my life).
