Expanding educational opportunities for students faced with poverty is Ashleigh's personal and professional priority. After studying education at Clemson University and researching policy and the systems that perpetuate inequalities in South Carolina's "Corridor of Shame", closing the opportunity gap to ensure all students have access to a high quality education has served as the driving force in Ashleigh’s professional career. Ashleigh’s experience includes working in several school districts in South Carolina, both rural and city, as a teacher, professional developer and a district consultant and later working at TNTP (The New Teacher Project), a Brooklyn, NY-based non-profit, to improve school districts’ human capital systems, policies and strategies to ensure an effective teacher in each classroom. Currently, Ashleigh serves as a Highly Specialized Advisor to the Regional Superintendent of Shelby County Schools’ turnaround initiative, the iZone, where she manages the central-level strategy and innovation in Memphis’s lowest performing schools. Ashleigh works closely with senior district leadership to ensure iZone schools reach their goal to move students from the bottom 5% to the top 25% of student achievement in five years.
