Asif Alam
Researcher in Miami, FL
Asif Alam is an RF engineer specializing in RF/mmWave-THz antennas, phased arrays, RF interconnects, and high-frequency system integration, and a Presidential Scholar at Florida International University (FIU). His work focuses on translating concepts from electromagnetic (EM) simulation to prototype to measurement, and toward deployable, product-ready RF systems, with applications spanning 6G, satellite communications (satcom), and high-frequency sensing.
Across GHz-to-THz, Asif has contributed to beamforming/beam steering and multi-beam array architectures, along with the high-frequency integration “plumbing” that makes performance hold up in real builds, including waveguide, SIW / air-filled SIW (AFSIW), transitions, low-loss RF interconnects, and RFIC-to-antenna integration. He designed a 250–350 GHz SiGe BiCMOS slot antenna and developed multi-tilted-beam AFSIW satellite arrays, both rigid and flexible, targeting state-of-the-art gain and coverage.
A signature theme in his work is scaling. Asif developed an RF scaling framework, “Moore’s Law for RF,” to benchmark progress and guide RF technology roadmaps as frequency, bandwidth, and integration demands rise.
Asif’s work has been recognized with a Gold Medal at the 50th International Exhibition of Inventions, Geneva, 2025, and he is a co-inventor on two granted U.S. patents, 2025. He was an OURS-FIU Research Scholar, sponsored by 3M and Lockheed Martin, and he also held an IEEE Electronics Packaging Society (EPS) RF Packaging Fellowship, where he proposed a new class of 6G antennas in collaboration with Fraunhofer Heinrich Hertz Institute (HHI), Berlin.
Asif has presented his work at major IEEE venues, including IMS 2023 in San Diego, CA, the IEEE International Symposium on Phased Array Systems & Technology in Boston, MA, IEEE VTC in Washington, DC, and the IEEE Texas Symposium in Waco, TX.
