Dr Athanasios (Thanos) Diamantopoulos is a Consultant Interventional Radiologist at Guy’s and St Thomas' and an Senior clinical lecturer (Hon) at King’s College London. He qualified in 2004 from the medical school of University of Patras in Greece. He holds a PhD in experimental prevention of contrast induced nephropathy.

He has been trained in all aspects of general and interventional radiology and he has completed a fellowship at Guy’s and St Thomas prior to been appointed as a consultant at the same hospital. Following successful exams he has been board certified by the European Board of Interventional Radiologists (EBIR). He is the previous clinical lead for Interventional Radiology at Guys and St Thomas Interventional Radiology department.

Dr Diamantopoulos has authored or co-authored many peer-reviewed original scientific papers and book chapters. In addition, he has presented numerous scientific presentations and invited lecturer in national and international conferences. He is the primary investigator (PI) and co-investigator in numerous studies. He has been recognised as a Fellow of the Cardiovascular and Interventional Radiology Society of Europe (FCIRSE) for his significant contribution to interventional radiology and cardiovascular imaging. Since 2019 he serves as an elected member in the research committee of CIRSE.

He specialises in minimally invasive image guided vascular, non-vascular and interventional oncology procedures. He distinguishes himself by performing cutting-edge procedures that includes all aspects of basic and advanced interventional radiology procedures with a special focus in complex arterial vascular interventions, complex venous treatments and ablation of solid tumours as well as image guided biopsies and drainages, venous access (i.e. Port, PICC, Hickman lines, tunnelled and non-tunnelled central venous catheters), embolisations including varicocele and fibroid embolisations etc.

In an effort to deliver the best possible results, Dr Diamantopoulos likes to incorporate the latest technological advances into his treatment methods such as drug eluting technologies, carbon dioxide angiography, the latest atherectomy techniques and all the newest ablation technologies.
