PROFESSIONAL POSITION

Elena Atienza-Macías has been a Researcher at the Inter-University Chair in Law and the Human Genome, University of Deusto and University of the Basque Country UPV/EHU since December 2009 (6 years), where she coordinates the periodical publications of the Chair, namely the Law and the Human Genome Review and the Chair´s monographs.

She is currently a Basque Government Postdoctoral Researcher at the University of the Basque Country UPV/EHU, Faculty of Law. This research is framed within the Basque Government Postdoctoral Program entitled: The Big Data in the area of health law. New European legal framework.This research program will be jointly developed between the University of the Basque Country UPV/EHU (Chair in Law and the Human Genome) under the supervision of Prof. Dr. Carlos María Romeo Casabona and the University of Coimbra (Centre for Biomedical Law / Institute for Legal Research) under the supervision of Prof. Dr. André Gonçalo Dias Pereira and Prof. Dr. Alexandre Libório Dias Pereira.

EDUCATION

Law Degree from the University of Deusto (Bilbao Campus), specialising in Private and Business Law (2000-2005).

In 2005 and 2006, she prepared for examinations in labour law. She is an Occupational Health and Safety Senior Technician specializing in Occupational Safety and Health (2009).

In October 2012 she was awarded a Master’s Degree in Fundamental Rights and the Public Powers of the University of the Basque Country UPV/EHU (Bilbao Campus). This Master has achieved the “Mention of Excellence” by the Ministry of Education. Her final dissertation project was an analysis of the legal implications on the use of biological samples and personal data for the purposes of doping control in the sport sector.

In March 2016 she was awarded the title of Doctor in Law (International mention) from the University of Deusto, with a distinction "cum laude" given unanimously for her doctoral thesis. Her thesis concerning The legal and ethical implications of the use of performance enhancing drugs and new doping practices in sport, has been supervised by Prof. Dr. iur Dr. med. Dr. h. c. mult. Carlos María Romeo Casabona and Prof. Dr. Aitziber Emaldi Cirión.

She has been a Visiting researcher at the Centre for Biomedical Law and a Visiting Lecturer, University of Coimbra (Portugal).
