At The Flag Golf

Welcome to At the Flag Golf! We're just a pair of like-minded guys with a love for all things golf. This project was born out of a conversation about the layout of a local course that led to discussions about general course design, routing, and architecture. Before long, this blossomed into a full scale inquest to learn and share more about this side of the game of golf in all its history and intricacy.

Great course architects such as the likes of MacKenzie, Tillinghast, MacDonald, Ross Raynor, Jones, and many more delivered a wonderful array of classic courses that are still considered the pinnacle of the profession. These timeless designs have tested the mettle of players spanning decades of play. These hallowed grounds have stood as the platform for the emergence of the select few to achieve greatness in this beloved game.

The central tenets of At The Flag include a dedication to golf in its purest form. We believe that golf is a transcendent experience that builds character. The King, Arnold Palmer, once said "you must play boldly to win" and that boldness he refers to requires confidence. This confidence is born out of inherent abilities and skills. Some will possess the physical prowess while others have an unflappable mental acuity that places them in an elite company of those capable ofmastering the game. The rest of us are left to our devices to get creative. Ben Hogan once said that "golf is 20% talent and 80% management". The management component is the most alluring to us. By understanding the complexities of how a course is designed you can devise a management strategy that in some ways may make up for your lack of talent. This approach may seem tedious or less glamorous but for us it is fun. It helps us see the game through the lens of the great architects and appreciate the game that much more.
