Dr. Aurélio Manuel Valente
With more than 20 years of progressive experience in the administration of higher education, Aurélio Manuel Valente serves as Vice President for Student Affairs at Governors State University (GSU). In this position, he contributes strategic planning and leadership as GSU transitioned from an upper-division institution to a comprehensive residential public University, the only in the Chicago Southland area with the admission of its first freshmen class and the development of campus student housing in 2014, and the establishment of a competitive intercollegiate athletics program.
Responsibilities as Chief Student Affairs Officer includes supervision of a diverse portfolio of departments that comprise academic support services; including writing support and supplemental instruction, athletics and recreation, career services, disability services, diversity and social justice programs, mental health counseling and health records, residential life, student life, and veterans affairs. In addition, Dr. Valente oversees enrollment management functions that include admissions and recruiting, registrar, financial aid and dual degree programs.
Dr. Valente’s research interests include institutional efforts to promote student engagement and academic success and the study of student development in the first year of college. He has published several articles regarding first-year experience, service–learning, and ethics in higher education in the Journal of College and Character and served as a contributing chapter author for the third and fourth editions of The Handbook of Student Affairs Administration. Aurélio Manuel Valente earned his B.S. and MBA from the University of Massachusetts at Dartmouth, his M.Ed. from Suffolk University (MA) and his doctorate in Higher Education from The Florida State University.
