Bolt patterns have 4-, 5-, and 8-lug holes. There are also 16-lug bolt patterns and 9-lug bolt patterns. Some bolt patterns are used with the use of bolt holes instead of studs so that a bolt pattern may fit in a wheel.
To get a good look at a bolt pattern you need to measure the diameter of the bolt hole at the nut (with the same wrench), and remove the wheel bolt (if you have one) from the bolt. Do not remove the wheel because you may damage the wheel. There are bolt patterns to choose from and each has a set size.
The bolts are marked with the bolt circle or "bolt hole". These initials tell which specific bolt hole the wheel bolt fits into. In a 12.9-13mm diameter bolt pattern there are 6 bolts, one on each side. A 12.9x17 bolt pattern has 4 bolts on each side.
A bolt circle of 9x100 would indicate a 9-lug pattern on a circle with a diameter of 100mm. A bolt circle of 12x100 would indicate a 12-lug pattern on a circle with a diameter of 100mm. A bolt pattern may include the bolt and nut being joined together with bolts or in other locations.
A bolt pattern (with a diameter greater than 1.000mm) may indicate a bolt or a part of it being joined together. As a rule the outer diameter should be between 1.000 - 1.000mm.
A bolt pattern with a diameter greater than 1.000mm may be in a hole pattern or stud pattern. A hole pattern may have the bolt and nut being joined at their respective places on the body. A set or other means is provided to fasten the nuts or the bolt and to remove the mounting bolt during assembly.
