Ava Dorrance

With experience in individual and group psychiatric care as well as eating disorder treatment, Iowa native Ava S. Dorrance has been treating patients since 1987. She has received certification in a number of specialized treatment methods, including Rational Emotive Therapy and Dialectical Behavioral Therapy. She holds a Master of Social Work (M.S.W.) from the University of Iowa, where she completed her thesis on hospice care as part of her program of study. Ava Dorrance is licensed as an Independent Social Worker and holds membership in the Academy of Certified Social Workers and the National Association of Social Work.

Ava Dorrance currently practices in Atlantic, Iowa, at Cass County Memorial Hospital, where she evaluates and treats individuals, families, and groups. Since the beginning of her tenure with the hospital, Ms. Dorrance has created and instituted a full-day program for behaviorally challenged children and worked in the Atlantic schools counseling children and youth. She began her affiliation with the hospital in 2005, though in 2006 she took a leave of absence to fulfill family obligations. During the subsequent three years, Ava Dorrance founded Guided Mindful Change and Wellness. As a wellness coach, she helped clients optimize overall health including mental, social, physical, and behavioral aspects. She returned to Cass County Memorial Hospital in 2009 and continues to serve in her original role.

Ms. Dorrance's professional history includes social work in Iowa and Illinois. She served as coordinator of the Cedarloo Psychiatric Clinic's eating disorder program at Covenant Medical Center in Waterloo, Iowa, and as a consultant with the State of Iowa's Department of Human Services. Prior to joining the staff of Cass County Memorial Hospital, she served as a psychiatric social worker at Robert Young Mental Health Center and then within the Genesis Health System, both located in Moline, Illinois.

In her free time, Ava S. Dorrance enjoys a variety of activities including exercise, meditation, and reading, with Willa Cather and Ken Pope included among her favorite authors. She is also an avid musician and participates in her church music club.
