Traveling over thousands of miles ever year, staying up late nights watching film, waking up at the crack of dawn for warm-ups, missing countless social events, and enduring lots of physical and emotional stress are not exactly ideal situations that every teenager wants to put themselves in. However, I put up with all of this for fifteen years and I would do it all over again if I had to. Welcome to the life of Avery Carter.

My mom introduced me to the sport of soccer when I was three years old. Little did she know how much her decision to sign me up for soccer at the YMCA would impact my life. Not only did my love for the game increase over the years, but so did my maturity. I learned various important life skills. The most important life skill I learned was from my coach in high school. He told us that no matter what is thrown our way, we must overcome the adversity. The term adversity became our team motto, and I think about it all the time whenever I am faced with a tough decision. While writing this portfolio and enduring the emotional strain that English 1102 threw my way, the term adversity echoed in the back of my head and pushed me to become a better writer. Becoming a better player (and a better writer) took an immense amount of time, patience, strength, and most importantly, a good attitude.

Not only did I learn timeless lessons, but I made friendships of a lifetime. My soccer friends will be in my wedding, and I know they have my back no matter what. I am so thankful that our love for the game brought us together and they inspire me each and everyday to be a better person.

Without soccer, I truly would not be the person that I am today.
