Ana has a Master of Communications Digital Media and a Master of Communications Communities and Networks from the University of Washington. She is currently working at Coast Guard Headquarters as the Digital Media Officer, in charge of the modernization of the Coast Guard front facing digital presence.
As a public affairs officer in the Coast Guard she has a wealth of experience in crisis communications and social media. She has been a public information officer responding to Hurricanes Katrina, Rita, Gustav, Ike, the I35W bridge collapse, the collision of the Mel Oliver and Tintomara on the Mississippi River, the Deep Water Horizon Oil Spill and numerous major events.
She spoke at SXSW on Disaster and the Future of Crisis Communications, which you can listen to here.
She helped design the social media program of the U.S. Coast Guard and served as the first official blogger for the service.
Ana also served as a Command Duty Officer, Search and Rescue coordinator and Operational Safety Manager at Sector Los Angeles/Long Beach, and as a Deck Watch Officer on the CGC Jarvis.
