What is Diabetes?

It is an ailment caused due to a very a percentage of sugar (glucose) present in the blood. The high percentage of present glucose cannot be used by the body and it can spike into other major health problems like blindness, kidney and heart failures, strokes etc.

Diabetes can happen to anyone, across the different age groups. It has been estimated that at present, there are more than 380 million people across the world who suffer from Diabetes. An evaluation by the World Health Organization has shown that this number could dramatically double itself by the year 2030.

Everyday life is very tough with Diabetes. The disease raises major monetary and physical barriers to tackle for the family of the patient. There are two major Diabetes types: Type 1 and Type 2.

Type 1 Diabetes was earlier known as Juvenile Diabetes since it is mostly diagnosed in children – almost 5% people contract Type 1 Diabetes. The body of patients of Type 1 Diabetes does not produce its own insulin and thus, a large percentage of sugar in the blood does not reach the cells. In a healthy body, this blood sugar reaches the cells and is converted into energy to be used by the body.

Type 2 Diabetes is a by-product of severe dietary changes, low physical activity and more deskbound work. It is considered to a major part of the obesity epidemic. Due to sedentary lifestyles, more people every year are becoming diabetic.
