I've been collecting bamboo for years now. Bamboo captured my attention when I was seven years old and I watched as my Anole lizards made a freedom run for our bamboo privacy hedge never to be seen again. Every time I see a Golden Bamboo (Phyllostachys aurea ) hedge, I wonder how those little guys made out. Since then, I've traipsed through bamboo forests from Sonoma, California to Indonesia, Thailand and Hawaii. My house in San Francisco is located in what neighbors now call the "Bamboo Belt" due to both the sunny micro-climate and the grove I've planted in my back yard.
