Bárbara Duarte is getting a dual Ph.D. in Social Sciences at the Federal University of Juiz de Fora and the University of Strasbourg, France. Duarte's doctoral research concerns body modification, hacking and activism. Her investigation touches a global movement known as Body Hacktivism which is actively challenging long-held normative beliefs about what bodies do, what they should look like and how they should behave. Her worldwide fieldwork demonstrates that body hackers are not only pushing the boundaries of their own bodies, but are explicitly challenging the very definition of nature, culture, and technology. Currently, Bárbara Nascimento Duarte is attached to the Collège Doctoral Européen (CDE) and to the Association Française de Sociologie.
