Cervical kyphosis, also known as military neck is an abnormal condition for the cervical spine where it comes with a curve that does not look normal.

Causes of cervical kyphosis:

This condition occurs because of degenerative disc disease, congenital disorder, iatrogenic disorder, or bodily trauma. In cervical kyphosis, the neck is either bent in the direction of the backward or is abnormally straight.

Symptoms of cervical kyphosis:

  • Reduced range of motion

Why cervical kyphosis is common?

The ultimate cause of military neck is because of poor posture either at times sleeping or when you wake up. Poor posture while sitting at the computer desktop and occupational conditions, and repetitive movements can lead to military neck or cervical kyphosis.

How to diagnose cervical kyphosis?

The military neck is easily diagnosed with physical examination or either ordering imaging tests like MRI, CT scan, or x-ray. The military neck is diagnosed when the curve of the neck is either greater than 40° or lesser than 20°.

Treatment options for cervical kyphosis/ military neck:

The treatment for military neck includes a neck brace, and North Haven physical therapywith mild medications for reducing pain. These treatments are prescribed for neck curves not suppressing the spinal cord. In cases where it suppresses the spine, it is advised to call the surgery. In general conditions, physical therapy is advised as a common solution.

Even after surgery physical therapy is advised including the neck exercises like cervical extension and flexion cervical rotation as cervical lateral flexion. Along with these treatments home remedies like resting the neck, positioning the neck, application of ice and heat pad are recommended. It is also advised to check ergonomics for a military neck.
