Barclay Barrios
Professor and Associate Dean in Florida
Dr. Barclay Barrios is an academic leader, author, and professor with over two decades of experience in higher education. He currently serves as Associate Dean of Undergraduate Studies and Broward Campuses in the Dorothy F. Schmidt College of Arts and Letters at Florida Atlantic University. In this role, he oversees the full spectrum of the undergraduate experience—leading recruitment initiatives, advising systems, student retention efforts, and academic policy development. His administrative work is defined by a commitment to inclusive, student-centered learning and by a strategic vision for improving institutional outcomes, including graduation rates, academic progress, and first-year success.
Barrios is also a Professor of English, with expertise in composition and rhetoric, pedagogy, queer theory, and digital literacies. He is the author of Emerging: Contemporary Readings for Writers, a widely adopted textbook now in its fifth edition, as well as Intelligence: A Bedford Spotlight Reader. His scholarly work has appeared in leading journals including Pedagogy, The WAC Journal, and Computers and Composition, and he frequently presents on the intersections of writing instruction, educational technology, and equity in the classroom. His recent publications explore sustainable antiracist teaching practices and the evolving role of AI in higher education.
Beyond the classroom and committee room, Barrios is committed to fostering a more inclusive and imaginative academic culture. His work combines critical inquiry with a deep understanding of institutional structure, making him a trusted voice in both scholarly and administrative conversations. Outside of his professional roles, he finds inspiration in movement and creativity—training in multiple styles of dance, practicing weightlifting, and continuing a lifelong love of food rooted in his New Orleans upbringing. Through all of these pursuits, he brings a unique blend of rigor, empathy, and strategic thinking to every facet of his work.
