Barricaid Medical

Intrinsic Therapeutics is a Massachusetts medical device company that has developed a next generation Barricaid solution for spine condition patients requiring lumbar discectomy. The Barricaid device has achieved FDA approval in meeting its clinical goal of closing large defects that arise in the annulus and are associated with reherniation and the need for repeat surgeries.

Barricaid, a permanent implant, is designed with safety and durability at the fore. The anchor used to secure the Barricaid in its proper position is constructed from titanium alloy. The occlusion component that blocks the hole in the annulus employs an advanced flexible polymer material, with the device having been shown to generate consistently superior results over traditional lumbar discectomy for indicated patients.

Among the rigorous trials that Intrinsic Therapeutics’ device has been through is one that involved more than 20 hospitals in Germany, Switzerland and the Benelux and 554 patients who were split into those who had the Barricaid device implanted and those in a control group. The results of the definitive two-year study were published in The Spine Journal in 2018 showing approximately 50% reduction in repeat surgeries.
