Bart Pfankuch brings over twenty-two years of experience to his position as executive editor of the Rapid City Journal in South Dakota. As executive editor, Pfankuch directs all news coverage for the newspaper and its web site, manages all staff and budgeting, and oversees outreach initiatives to better connect the newspaper to the communities of Rapid City and Black Hills. Bart Pfankuch is well-versed in all aspects of the newspaper industry. As a journalist, he is known for his watchdog coverage of powerful institutions, trend reporting, and perceptive lifestyle pieces.

Bart Pfankuch graduated from the University of Wisconsin-Madison with a bachelor's degree in journalism and completed coursework in management and media law at Florida A&M University's graduate management program. He began his career as a reporter for the Eau Claire Leader-Telegram, where he won numerous awards for his coverage of the municipal government. He then became a reporter for the Florida Times-Union in Jacksonville, Florida, covering politics, the environment, and agriculture. While there, he developed the newspaper's first writing coach program and won a variety of awards for his writing. He moved on to become vice president and editorial director of Rowland Publishing in Tallahassee, Florida, leading editorial operations and a full redesign of two lifestyle magazines and increasing readership and advertising for both publications.

Prior to joining the Rapid City Journal, Pfankuch served as Bureau Chief for the Sarasota Herald-Tribune and was later named City Editor of the newspaper. As City Editor, he managed and streamlined daily operations, edited all major stories, and represented the newspaper at community events.

Bart Pfankuch brings his outgoing personality to all of his recreational activities and is actively involved in athletics, the outdoors, and the arts. He is an avid golfer, fisherman, and international traveler, and he has participated in a number of community theater productions. Pfankuch is a proactive contributor to community organizations: he coordinates and hosts his own charitable events to benefit the homeless, abandoned animals, and people with disabilities.
