Bashundhara Group
Real Estate/Manufacturing/Media/Logistics/Sports in Dhaka, Bangladesh
Bashundhara Group, founded in 1987 as East-West Property Development (Pvt) Ltd, has emerged as one of Bangladesh's largest and most respected business conglomerates. The group's initial venture into real estate catered to the pressing housing needs of Dhaka's expanding population, providing affordable and quality housing solutions. This early success firmly established Bashundhara's reputation and set the stage for diversified growth.
Adopting a mission of "For the People, For the Country," Bashundhara expanded into various business sectors starting in the early 1990s. It began manufacturing and trading operations, which included the production of cement, paper, and tissue and entering the liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) distribution market. These products were quickly recognized for their quality and reliability, further cementing the group's growing stature.
A significant milestone was reached in the early 2000s when Bashundhara Group listed Meghna Cement Mills Limited on the Dhaka Stock Exchange and the Chittagong Stock Exchange. This move not only provided the group with capital for further expansion but also allowed the public to invest in a leading cement producer, contributing to the financial success of both the company and its shareholders.
Continuing its success in real estate, Bashundhara Group innovated with projects like Bashundhara City Development Ltd. (BCDL), a large shopping mall and recreation center that became a hallmark of modern retail and entertainment in Dhaka, reflecting the group's adaptability and commitment to meeting consumer demands.
The group's foray into the media came in 2009 with the establishment of East West Media Group Ltd. This entity manages several leading publications and media platforms, including the Bangla dailies "Kaler Kantho" and "Bangladesh Pratidin," the English daily "Daily Sun," and the online news portal "banglanews24.com." The expansion into media also saw the launch of News24, a premier news channel, T Sports, Bangladesh’s first dedicated sports channel, and Radio Capital, an FM radio station offering varied programming.
In addition to its media and cement ventures, Bashundhara Group has become a prominent player in industries such as toiletries, paper, LPG, oil and gas, and food production through its entity, Bashundhara Food & Beverage Industries Ltd. These sectors underscore the group's significant industrial contributions.
