Bob & Dawn Beal

Uinta Mountains, Utah

Paths cross, lives change. For better or worse, it’s always different. Turning 40 was a milestone – an opportunity for reflection, for renewal. We dedicated the first years of our marriage to building a business. The costs were enormous, the sacrifices equal. And the only certainty is time continues on. We now dedicate ourselves – the next 40 years – to fulfillment and abundance. This journal is documentation of a journey toward the proper measurement of success – the JOY of living.

We are an off-the-grid, developing permaculture homestead, living in a 5th wheel trailer located on a 20 acre spread in the high altitude, semi-arid Uintah mountains of eastern Utah. "The Next 40" represents both a nickname for our property and the fulfillment of a life long dream.

Dawn and I (my name is Bob) lived separate lives until we met a decade ago. We both, however grew up with a burning desire to own a mountain and live as independently and self-sufficiently as possible. The last several years were dedicated to planning and preparing for this change in lifestyle. We 'tested the water' in 2013 with a 6-month stint living on the mountain (covered in Blog 1). This year, 2014, it's our full time adventure.

We operate an e-commerce business to finance our endeavor as we establish greater levels of independence. We are by no means experts at this - much of what we do is purely speculative and experimental. This is our approach - our story. The challenges, successes, joys and sorrows - we own. We learn and grow everyday. We test the boundaries of ourselves, our environment, and our love. Regardless of the outcome, we strive to live in the moment, and on our own terms.
