Teacher, Writer, and Consultant in Columbus, Ohio
I’m an early-rising, over-active, highly-optimistic, very-smiley, happily-married, former-high-school-now-middle-school-Spanish teacher who loves to read, eat great food, and travel!
During the 2016-17 school year, I took a traveling sabbatical, searching for schools and teachers around the world who want to create meaningful global connections and exploring best practices in a variety of education systems internationally. I made it to 12 countries in 12 months, and then topped off the year with a 4-week Fulbright-Hays grant for K-12 teachers to Ecuador and Peru/ Our goal was to learn how best to go about "teaching the andes" as a severely underrepresented region and indigenous group with distinct, endangered, and beautiful cultural practices, languages. (I got to learn a little Ecuadorian Kichwa and Peruvian Quechua), and ways of knowing and living. I am incredibly excited to return to my classroom this fall of 2017 and begin the work of thoughtfully incorporating what I've learned into my curriculum, while also planning various talks at local, state, regional, and national conferences to share what I've learned abroad.
Some of my interests include: thoughtful integration of technology and 21st century skills into the classroom, foreign & second language acquisition and pedagogy, educational psychology, intrinsic and extrinsic motivation, software design and programming (with some interest in game-based learning where it fits with my values regarding intrinsic motivation), developing global competency in and out of the classroom, brain-based learning, kinesthetic movement in the classroom, flexible and active arrangement of learning spaces for optimal student learning, and exploring creative ways of measuring both student and teacher performance.
I love to learn, explore, and question. To learn more about me, click around some of the links below - my Medium posts are probably the most recent writing I have published online. Please do not hesitate to get in touch!
