When making a bubble nest, a betta takes care to construct it with care, and even after it has been successfully made, it will continue to maintain it properly to ensure that it stays in tiptop shape-all ready and worthy to help its eggs develop properly.

Firstly, the male betta will head to the surface and select the perfect spot for it to create the bubble nest. It looks for several important qualities, such as distance from any turbulence or fast-flowing water, which may cause the nest to break up.

When it has determined the perfect spot, it begins to blow special kinds of bubbles that are far sturdier than the regular bubbles it may blow in the course of breathing or respiring at the surface. These special sorts of bubbles are reinforced by a certain kind of mucus that coats their surface and prevents them from being destroyed a matter of fact, they last far longer than regular bubbles thanks to this important ingredient. The betta will blow as many bubbles as it feels it needs to in this initial phase of nest construction. It may also incorporate certain things such as plant leaves and other such objects to give the nest a central piece to focus around.

The completed initial nest will rise above the water and be mound-like in shape. The bubbles once joined together, will not only be reinforced thanks to the mucus but will also reinforce one another-thus forming a rigid and durable structure. Nevertheless, a betta will continue to watch over this nest, blowing new bubbles as it deems necessary to keep the nest in tiptop shape, ready to protect fertilized betta eggs as they develop.

The nest protrudes above the water surface in order to keep the eggs away from predators such as other fish, spiders or insects, and waterborne bacteria, fungi, and viruses that may infect and kill them. In addition, the nest helps ensure that the betta eggs are kept close to oxygen in order to help them develop. Should the eggs fall to the bottom of the pond or stream the betta is in, they may not only be exposed to predators but may also fail to be able to absorb enough oxygen to help them develop.

When the eggs hatch, the betta will cease to maintain its bubble nest and will allow it to break up, instead of focusing on its fry. The nest's purpose will have been achieved and it will no longer be needed.
